Top 10 summer activities in Morzine

Everyone associates the Alps with winter and skiing but did you know that Morzine is one of the busiest year-round resorts in the French Alps? There is so much to do in summer and these, in no particular order, are our top 10 ‘must do’ activities…

  1. Road biking – If being part of the Tour de France isn’t enough to sell it to you, Morzine’s bike routes offer some of the most spectacular views across the Mont Blanc Massif, through beautiful Alpine valleys and take you on some of the most exhilarating Alpine roads and passes around. There are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafes to stop for refreshments on your days out and many options for bike rentals if you need to hire. Plus, if the thought of cycling up mountain passes is tiring enough, why not hire an electric bike to help do some of the work for you! Have a look here at some of the suggested itineraries

Via Ferrata – For the adrenaline junkies and indeed anyone brave enough to try something new, the Via Ferrata gives you a bird’s eye view of Avoriaz and Morzine as you make your way around the cliff edges with the safety of a harness which attaches you to the cliff. It is the best way to experience the views and inaccessible areas that previously only mountain climbers could access and the whole family can join in! Find out more here
  1. Swimming – Nature has provided some of the most spectacular swimming spots right on the doorstep. Lac Montriond is a haven for outdoor swimming and it even has a shallow pool created for children to swim in. In the centre of town, you can find the outdoor swimming pools which consist of three pools, including a childrens play area pool, a beach volleyball court, a flume and a café for refreshments.   1. Mountain Biking – Hailed as the European centre of MTB, Morzine is a hive of activity with bikers all summer long. The mountain has trails to suit everyone from beginners to experts and the Portes du Soleil hosts the infamous Crankworx festival and Pass’Portes du Soleil every summer.   1. Golf – Who would have thought that golfing would feature on an Alpine summer activity guide? Overlooking the town you can find Avoriaz golf course, a pristine 9 hole golf course that is open to all. Enjoy the views across the Alps and down to Morzine as you tee off in the summer sunshine. Drive 10 minutes to Les Gets and you can play the beautiful 18 hole course which has gained outstanding reviews from local members and tourists alike.   1. The Spartan Race – If a relaxing holiday isn’t your thing, come and join the thousands of people who turn up to participate in and support The Spartan Race. Held on the 1st and 2nd of July this year, the race has 5 entry levels including a childrens race. Expect a muddy, sweaty, fun filled weekend! To enter or to find out more click here
  1. Hiking and walking – Heading up in to the mountains needn’t be as arduous as you think. The network of pedestrian gondolas and chairlifts throughout the Portes du Soleil gives you access to the high mountain regions and lakes where you can enjoy routes of varying degrees of difficulty.   1. White water activities – Frogs rafting have an exciting collection of white water sports to keep everyone entertained. Rafting, Canyoning, Hydrospeeding and Canorafting are great fun activities to enjoy in the summer and the whole family can take part.   1. Paragliding – If you haven’t tried it before you may be surprised to find out just how relaxing this experience can be. You will float high above the mountains and can see all the way across to Mont Blanc! Warm thermals drive you up as you take off and then your instructor will gently glide you down to the valley floor. However, for the thrill seekers, you can always request them to put a spin on it!   1. Yoga and Massage – There are lots of yoga and spa options in Morzine for those who prefer a more laid back approach to your holiday. Join in at classes or book a private class with one of our recommended yoga instructors then treat yourself to a relaxing massage for the ultimate unwind day.
